So many of my clients tell me horror stories about things friends and family member have said about their fertility issues (and I have lots of my own examples, too). My clients have heard things like “You’re still young.” and “My cousin tried for 13 years and finally had a baby when she stopped trying.“ And after a miscarriage “At least you were only 8 weeks along.”
Really? Seriously? UGH!
It can be difficult to hear comments like this when you’re already in a raw emotional state. We know they’re just trying to be helpful, they simply have no idea what to say or how to comfort us. That’s why I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this article about infertility etiquette. It’s a great guide to forward to your friends and family to help them know what to say and not say and to help them understand what you’re going through. The article is written by Sue Dumais who struggled through infertility herself and founded a fertility yoga studio in Vancouver. Check out her website at http://www.familypassages.ca/.
